Supporting Local Groups

Our Chief Officer has provided administrative support and general guidance to local groups who work with older people.
This has taken the form of providing information and donating his (Age Concern Exmouth's ) time to help local groups apply for funding for their own group or activity. This has included working through the whole application process and liaising with funders and grant providers.
Success so far have been acheived with
The Mudbank Craft Group £600
Orcombe Court Social Group £400
The Over 60's Social Club £450
We weren't so lucky with The Lympstone Third Age Project but they can apply again as currently are The Brixington Ladies Getaway Club

Ukulele Workshops

During 2008 we ran a very successful 10 week Ukulele workshop for older people. The Ukulele is one of the most popular instruments for youngsters to learn today. Most schools now have the Ukulele replacing the recorder as the most sought after instrument to learn.
Age Concern Exmouth took this format and applied it to all those older people who always wanted to play an instrument but perhaps never had the opportunity in the past.
The 'Uke' is easy to learn and within minutes our local Guitar Teacher Arthur Cook had them strumming away and singing to war-time tunes along with some modern day Beatles hits!
Say Cheese!

The cry of "Say Cheese!" could be clearly heard on a recent Wednesday morning at the Day Centre.

Team Leader Sue Moore brought along her digital camera for people to try out and a happy hour or two was spent as everyone had a go at taking photos of staff and each other.

One of our regular visitors was particularly delighted with the morning.  "I didn't think I'd be able to use a camera again" she said "As I have poor vision in one eye and cannot find the viewfinder. But with the digital camera I didn't need to - I just looked at the screen!"

Photos were downloaded onto the laptop computer  for everyone to see. "Much quicker than taking them to the chemist and waiting for them to be developed!" was everone's verdict.

The prints wer later giovcen out to everyone.

We haven't room to show them all here, so her are just a few to give you a flavour of the day.

Live Music Entertainment

With funding from the Concertina Trust and Age Concern Bright Ideas Programme our aim here was to build and develop our services with those older people in Care and Residential homes as well as those living in Sheltered Accommodation.
The objective was to build rapport with Home owners and managers as well as engaging with residents themselves.
Live music was the to be the driving factor. With that in mind we enlisted the help of a Volunteer who was to run, manage and co-ordinate the whole project. We were very fortunate to find Margaret.
She set about contacting all the homes, entertainers and quickly established herself as the person who would be "The Agent", she visited homes, contacted the entertainers put them together and the result was a fantastic 12 month project that saw 'live music' being delivered to care, residential homes and sheltered accommodation across Exmouth.
We provide every thing free of charge to the homes. There were singers, key-board players and variety entertainers. One such group was Blitz and Peaces a wartime reminiscence act that brought both joys and tears to people with many fond memories of the war and their earlier years.
